 PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The goal of the Twin City Hospital Healthy Community Outreach Program is to provide an innovative multi-agency means to reduce the number of overweight and obese men, women and children of all ages in Tuscarawas County and the surrounding counties of Carroll, Guernsey and Harrison.

The Healthy Community Outreach Program has the following components: Fit for Life & Fit for Fun classes and Diabetes Education.

FIT FOR LIFE & FIT FOR FUN CLASSES
An adult Fit for Life class listens as Dr. McKnight provides tips for healthy living.
The Healthy Community Outreach Program will provide nutrition and exercise training at a nominal cost through two “Fit” Programs.

Fit for Life is a 10 week, individualized program which emphasizes realistic lifestyle changes resulting in enhanced levels of health and fitness. Participants will meet once weekly for less than 1 hour and will use customized fitness and diet plans developed by our team.

Under Dr. McKnight’s instruction, children at a Fit for Fun class enjoy hands-on learning activities such as learning correct serving sizes and building “a rainbow” on their plates.
Fit for Fun is a 4-6 week, individualized program which emphasizes the primary goals of the Fit for Life program on an age appropriate level for children and teenagers, grades K-12. Parent/Child participation in the program is encouraged.

The program’s key fitness components are cardiovascular fitness, strength conditioning and flexibility. The program’s key nutrition components include nutritionally balanced, everyday foods with emphasis on moderation and variety and avoidance of high calorie, high-fat foods.

Fit for Life/Fit for Fun classes provide the following services: initial and final blood work including cholesterol level (Fit for Life only), weekly instruction with personalized feedback and periodic measurement of heart rate, blood pressure, body fat and weight.

Childcare is available for children of class participants at no cost.

 DIABETES EDUCATION
The Healthy Community Outreach Program will provide nutritional counseling to diabetic participants as well as participants who are at risk for diabetes. Adults will be able to work with Twin City Hospital’s dietician to create a personalized diet to optimize their success in managing their diabetes, where applicable, and/or to help them achieve success in reducing their weight. Specialized nutritional counseling for children and teens will be provided by a dietician from Children’s Medical Center of Akron through the Twin City Medical Group’s Pediatric offices. Further diabetic counseling can be sought through Twin City Hospital’s Diabetic Wellness Program at (740) 922-4380 for adults and Twin City Medical Group’s Pediatric Offices at (740) 922-7477 for children.
