The Pharmacy staff at Twin City Hospital is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art pharmaceutical services. Staffed by licensed, registered pharmacists and technicians, the Pharmacy Department is an integral part of the health care team. The Department provides the following services to Hospital inpatients:
- Drug Monitoring: The use of all medications is monitored. The hospital's computer system automatically monitors for drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, and drug allergies.
- IV-Admixture Service: The Pharmacy staff mixes all medications given intravenously using aseptic, sterile technique, in a laminar flow hood. All staff are tested for competency in aseptic technique. This assures a sterile IV medication admixture.
- Unit-Dose Drug Distribution System: Medications are checked and dispensed on a 24 hour distribution system. This assures each patient will receive a 24 hour supply of medication daily, which means the patient's medications are checked daily and keeps waste to a minimum.
- Nutritional Support: The Pharmacy Department consults with the physicians and dietitians at the hospital in preparing IV nutritional support. IV mixtures of amino acids and dextrose combinations, called Hyperalimentation, are compounded and dispensed to patients needing nutritional support, yet cannot eat.
- Renal Monitoring: Patients with poor renal function are monitored because of the inability to eliminate certain drugs from their bodies. Dosage adjustments may be required for these drugs.
- Drug Information: One of the most important services provided by the Pharmacy Department is drug information. Nurses, physicians, and patients are provided with drug information as needed. Computerized printouts are available through the Pharmacy Department on all drugs kept in the Pharmacy.
